Group preaches conservation message

Residents of Letlhakeng have been advised to take care of their environment to address the challenge of global warming which has been the major cause of the frequent heatwaves and lack of rainfall.
Speaking on the sidelines of a theatre performance at the village main kgotla recently, Itireleng People Theatre Group director, Mr Tefo Motsholatase, said the Thamaga-based group was compelled to raise awareness on the dangers of environmental pollution.
“The country is currently facing one of the worst droughts it has ever experienced and temperatures are sky rocketing. Surely this has to be a wake-up call to every citizen to save the environment. We have people cutting down trees, illegal sand mining, deforestation, water and air pollution which are degrading the ozone layer.
This is exactly why the atmosphere is so hot,” he said. Mr Motsholatase advised the business community to engage in business practices, which were eco-friendly.
He said in these modern times of technology, companies and businesses should desist from practices that could be harmful to the environment.
He said although they did encounter problems in their quest to raise public awareness on environmental conservation, they would persist because of the importance of the task at hand.
He nonetheless said they were receiving support from the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) who were sponsoring their campaign through the National Environmental Fund.
Mr Motsholatase further said they educated the public through theatre and drama performances because edutainment has proved to be effective in spreading a message.
For his part Ditshegwane Youth Club group leader, Mr Tswelelo Baalotswe, said their drama group had decided to align itself with the Itireleng People Theatre Trust to help them in spreading environmental education message.
He said they have been concerned about the frequent veld fires ravaging the country as well as malicious disposal of waste which he says negatively affects the environment.
