Lapa La Lerato shows compassion

The Lapa La Lerato Catholic church priest, Father William Horlu, says his church intends to help government achieve its Vision 2016 pillar of a compassionate, just and caring nation.
He said his church was taking care of 30 children whose ages ranged between two to nine years, 11 of which were street kids. He said it was against this backdrop that they decided to embark on a fundraising mission to boost the church coffers.
One of the fundraising activities, he noted, was a sponsored walk where they managed to raise at least P12 000.
He said their intention was to raise P100 000 which would be channeled towards building a screen wall around the church premises, amongst other things.
“We need the wall not only to protect the children we are keeping here but also to protect the church property and garden. We also want to stop people from trespassing through our premises,” he noted.
He said in order to work towards the target they have also planned a thanksgiving ceremony later this month where families will donate to the church.
Father Horlu said that even though they have hired four full time staff members to take care of the children, they are still faced with challenges because the children do not stay in one place.
“They can’t keep moving up and down forever, they need a stable home.
We are currently working with the Masiela Trust Fund and UNICEF to secure a plot where we can build them a place of residence, especially those under six years,” he said. Ends
