Crime rises in Metsimotlhabe
09 Nov 2015
Sub-Inspector Helen Ngubo of Mogoditshane Police Station has expressed concern over the rise in crime in Metsimotlhabe. Speaking during a kgotla meeting last week, Sub-Inspector Ngubo said that they have registered 22 burglaries, three cases of car theft, five of rape and 28 of stealing from person starting January to October 2015.
She observed that Metsimotlhabe’s exponential growth is putting a lot of pressure on the police’s limited resources.
She said inactive crime prevention clusters do not help the situation as they do not patrol as regularly as they used to. She said that only a few people are joining the police volunteer program, citing how they only have one volunteer in Gaphatshwa.
“I urge you to revive these clusters as they are very important,” she said.
For her part, Constable Kgomotsego Monyere advised residents to always be on the alert for crooks, especially as the festive season approaches. She said that they must protect their hard earned cash and avoid carrying large sums of money. She advised them to inform their neighbours and the police when they leave for the holidays. She also complained that their office lights are not working, which makes working at night difficult.
Another speaker was Ms Amelia Molome from Ikageng Junior Secondary School who raised concern over some students who abuse drugs, especially marijuana, which they smuggle into school premises.
She said that their investigations have revealed that the students carry over the habit from primary school. She urged parents to partner with teachers and police to find ways of curbing the unruly behaviour. Ends
