University students build house for needy

Universityof Botswana Student Representative Council (UBSRC) inspired by the Presidential Housing Appeal, has built and handed over a two bedroomed house to an needy student.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony recently in Borolong ,Shashe West constituency, the director of Student Welfare at the university, Dr Hlanganiso Roy said the SRC is often viewed on the negative aspects mostly but however they have other sides which they are often not recognised of.
But though there are some incidences inwhich they will be in conflict with the management of the institution, they have other projects which they are undertaking as part of their social responsibility which are aimed at giving back to the communities which they come from. Dr Roy stated as division focused on the welfare of students, they always guide the students to become responsible citizens who will not forget their background.
He also added that although the main focus at the institution is academics, they do as well continue on students development started by parents from the family households to appreciate and guide students to understand that being away from parents for the first time as many who start at the university, it does not mean that one should forget principles that have guided them until that stage.
“We aim to maintain good behaviour among our students steering them towards a successful future,” he said.Meanwhile the president of SRC Mr McDonald Kgosiekae explained that the project has passed through four SRC's before it could be finally handed over.
He said when they were elected into office they decided to push for the completion of the project so that they could start work on other projects of value for Batswana.
Apart from the projects they are handing over, they are working on other projects amongst them private schools to which they provide teaching materials and stationaries. And with government schools they go there to share on the importance of education as pillar to one's successful future.
And he added that still at government schools that they liaise with school management and social welfare unit to adopt needy students whom they support throughout their education.
He nonetheless advised the young beneficiary; Poloko Edward not to view his new house as a donation but as his property which requires proper maintenance from him noting looking after it very he will enjoy leaving in it.As for Poloko, he said the gesture has inspired him to in future return the favour to another needy person and help in uplifting their life.
