Residents plead for senior school

Residents of Kasane have requested for a senior secondary school and a fully-fledged hospital in the district.
Speaking during a kgotla meeting addressed by President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama on Wednesday (October 28), the Village Development Committee (VDC) chairperson, Ms Peggy Inambao noted that the nearest senior secondary school was 300 kilometres. “We fail to take part in our children’s education because of the distance,” she said.
In his welcome remarks, Kgosi Tshegofatso Samoka also said their hospital was built in 1958 and could no longer cope with the increasing population in the district
In his response, President Khama explained that for a unified school to be built, they have to consider the population of the students.
“Your concerns, however, are justified looking at the distance, but Nata still has room to accommodate more students so we cannot rush to build another senior school,” he said.
He did however promise to look into the matter. The Minister of Health, Ms Dorcas Makgatho admitted that she was aware of the hospital issue, noting that it was moved from NDP 10 to NDP 11.
“We have made it a priority in the current development plan,” she said.
In other issues, the Minister of Lands and Housing, Mr Prince Maele updated residents on plot allocations, noting that there were 3 565 people in Kazungula on the waiting list. He emphasised that they were going to follow the waiting list as it stands and would not make any exceptions.
The area Member of Parliament, Mr Machana Shamukuni emphasised the need for a hospital, adding that refering patients to Nyangabgwe Hospital was costly as it was about 500 kilometers away. Ends
