Parents interest in children education important

26 Oct 2015

Parents have been advised to show interest in their children`s education and ensure they get the best learning despite their status of living.

During a prize giving ceremony at Borakalalo Primary School recently, Member of Parliament for Molepolole North, Mr Mahommed Khan advised parents to liaise with teachers and even go forth and inquire at the school when they realise that their child`s performance is not satisfactory.

Students were advised that life is “a do it yourself` project” which needs an individual to be focused and responsible for their everyday decisions, knowing they are the moulders of their own future. “Everyone’s attitude is his or her window to the world,” said Borakalalo school head Ms Mothusi Gaoforwe.

Ms Gaoforwe urged students to avoid negative attitudes towards everything they do or say, noting a Biblical  saying, “life and death are in the power of the tongue”

She explained that prize giving is one of their strategies as the school to improve student performance, adding that last year the school pass rate was 75 per cent, rising from 72 per cent in 2013.

She said this year they expect above 80 per cent pass rate. However, Ms Gaoforwe raised a challenge that they have in her school, saying they do not have computers to facilitate ICT lessons.

In the awarding of prizes, best student in the infant department which comprises standard 1 up to 3 emerged to be a young standard one boy, Freddy Siako with an overall pass rate of 96 per cent who was receiving awards for almost every subject. He was followed by Theo Motswana - 86 per cent, doing standard four-middle department.

In upper department standard seven Katlego Maeletsa, led by example being among the best overall, walking away with a trophy to top the gifts. The prizes given to the students each comprised a traveling bag, bedding, and two-burner electric stove, electric iron and dinner sets among others.

However, guest of honor at the event, director of Choppies Stores Mr Rashid Chopdad gave a P250 cash prize for first and second position best overall students each. Mr Chopdad also pledged to buy the school five computers by January 2016, answering the school head Ms Gaoforwe’s outcry.

Councilor for the area, Mr Arafat Khan was responsible for the acquiring of sponsorship from Estate Construction, to the tune of P10 000, which was  used to buy the gifts. Ends
