Social workers lobby government for accreditation

The Botswana Social Workers Association (BOSWA) is adamant that it will succeed in lobbying the government to register and accredit the social work profession.
The association president, Mr Kgomotso Jongman told a press briefing recently that there was need for social work professionals to be accredited.
The new development, he said would result in adherence to best professional practices, as professionals would know that their practice certificates could be revoked, despite being qualified professionals.
He said they have already devised the social work council structure, which would be critical in admitting professionals into the body.
In addition, he said they have met with the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, to influence formulation of an Act of Parliament which will support the process.
However, Mr Jongman noted that the process might take longer than anticipated because there was need for further consultations and for stakeholders to buy in.
The press conference was also called to sensitise members of the profession about the commemoration of the World Social Work day held on March 19. The commemoration was held under the theme: Promoting Social and Economic Equalities.
However, Mr Jongman regretted that the profession had not been recognised in the country hence the less appreciation. “Ccurrently struggling to have older social workers on board because they say the association is for young people who do not have families,” he said.
The association vice secretary general, Mr More Tshupeng said the misapprehension of social work has led to the spread of limited social roles across other professions. ENDS
